wes leonard fennville - Heartbreak and shock hit a Michigan high school basketball on Thursday, when before hundreds of spectators, Wes Leonard star player collapsed and died after a game-winning shot in overtime with his team closed a perfect season.

Leonard, 16, of Fennville High went to a cardiac arrest and did not respond after the game, say news reports. He rushed to the hospital around 9:15 in the Netherlands and 85 minutes later pronounced dead, according to hospital spokeswoman Deb Patterson. The cause of death has not yet been determined.

Leonard, a "great athlete" (as in the rest of the team's coach), who scored 1,000 points over his short career, was shot in the winning layup for a 57-55 game over high Bridgman, near Fennville in the 20-0 season.

"It's hard to" teammate Shane Bale told a local newspaper, the Holland Sentinel, which also reported that just before his downfall, Leonard was raised in the air for his teammates in an act of joy.
